Genomics strategy from Genomics England

Genomics England’s plans to screen a limited number of babies shortly after birth using newly developed genomic technology is a research project.  It will be organised in a limited number of sites and remains distinct from the national newborn screening programme offered to all babies born and delivered on behalf of the NHS.

It is hoped that the lessons learned from the Genomics England research study will help inform policies aimed to achieve the early detection of children with rare disorders.”

What exactly is the NHS England Genomics Strategy?

Wait, wait... what's genomics?

The study of the complete set of DNA (including all of its genes) in a person.

 What is genomic medicine?

A branch of medicine that uses a person’s genomic information to improve their clinical care and health outcomes

So, what is purpose of the strategy?

To accelerate the use of genomic medicine across the NHS.

Sounds good. how will this be achieved?

Through focusing on the four key priority areas we've broken down below:

·         To expand the use of genomics across the NHs.

·         To deliver fair access to genomic testing.

·         To put genomics at the forefront of the transition to the NHS’s move to using more data and digital tools (e.g., doctors can access genomic, clinical, and diagnostic information quickly using online records to help them in treating the patient).

·         To build up the service through cutting-edge science, research and innovation.
