VCFS Clinics
Specialist multi-disciplicary clinics for VCFS/22q11.2/di-George Sydrome
There are currently three special clinics for VCFS held throughout the country. The idea is that you can see as many specialists covering the various aspects that can occur with the syndrome as possible, all in one appointment. This is extremely useful for many people and for the specialists themselves. So, for example, you may be able to see a cleft palate specialist, a speech and language specialist, a cardiologist, a psychologist and specialist nurses, etc. all together.
Frenchay Hospital near Bristol began holding regular clinics in their (very smart!) new Cleft and Speech and Language department building at the beginning 2006. They cover the whole of the south west of England and would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to be refered to them - it's really easy, just contact us at MaxAppeal or call
Tina Owen, Anne Roberts or Julia Cadogan at the South West Cleft Unit on 0117 340 3998
A referral will usually need to be madethrough your GP.
Three-four people are seen per session and MaxAppeal provide family support and information in the waiting room, so you'll be offered tea and coffee, have friendly faces to introduce you to the (also very friendly) specialists and be able to ask us lots of questions as well!.
Other Clinics specialising in VCFS are held at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London and Addenbrookes, Cambridge. Again, please contact us if you would like to know more about being referred to them.
As with all our pages, keep checking this one regularly as details of the Clinics and news from them will be posted up as we have it.
China Study
This is pdf is a document written by Dr Alex Habel, the Peadiatrician at Great Ormond Street's specialist clinic. Max Appeal is providing funding for this study to be carried out. 22q deletion is not regularly diagnosed in non-caucasian populations possibly because of poor recognition of facial characteristics. Thus Max Appeal’s trustees felt that this study combining the expertise of Dr Hable and Professor Hammond could provide information to address this issue.
